  • The term "rhinestone," from the French caillou du Rhin, came to be because the colorless, hard-glass artificial gems were originally made at Strasbourg (on the Rhine).

  • The microwave was invented after a researcher walked by a radar tube and a chocolate bar melted in his pocket.

  • On maps, adjacent countries are usually shown in different colors. The smallest number of colors needed for a world map is Four.

  • A "pibroch" is a piece of music for the bagpipe, consisting of a theme with variations, usually martial but sometimes dirgelike.

  • Facetious, abstemious, abstentious, arsenious, and arteriosus are the only five words in the English language that contain the vowels a, e, i, o, and u in their proper order.

  • A car's instrument panel is called a dashboard. The term dates back to horse-and-buggy days when dashing horses kicked up mud, splashing the passengers riding behind them. The dashboard was devised to protect them.

  • Shakespeare spelled his own name several different ways.

  • A "fruit machine" is the British term for a slot machine, or "one-armed bandit."

  • The word "toast," meaning a proposal of health, originated in Rome, where an actual bit of spiced, burned bread was dropped into wine to improve the drink's flavor, absorb its sediment, and thus make it more healthful.

  • The term "hung jury," a jury that cannot agree on a verdict, was coined in the 1840s.

  • An ant can survive for up to two weeks underwater

  • The slogan on New Hampshire license plates is 'Live Free or Die'. These license plates are manufactured by prisoners in the state prison in Concord.
